Matt Tolentino

The Matt Tolentino Band

It's no surprise that a 19 piece dance band like the Singapore Slingers can't always fit into the venues where Matt plays- that is why he frequently uses smaller combinations. Mostly known as the Matt Tolentino Band, the occasional pseudonym is sometimes employed (Matt Tolentino and his Blue Four, Matt Tolentino and his Hot Five, etc.), and the instrumentation almost always centers around guitar/banjo and drums. Most of the time, the Matt Tolentino quartet uses tuba to supply the bass, but occasionally string bass is used. Tolentino himself will play bass saxophone from time to time. Many times the band is augemented with another horn player, either a cornet or secondary reed, or sometimes hot violin or fiddle is used.

The Matt Tolentino band can be seen around Dallas, playing everything from jazz clubs and dances, to corporate events, weddings and house parties. Their music is a lot of fun, an energetic blend of hot music, that tips the hat to everything from Bix Beiderbecke to Gus Viseur, Bob Wills to Lionel Belasco. Their music is guaranteed to get you up out of your seat and out on the dance floor. The band covers everything from hot jazz to western swing, French mussette to early calypso. Few things are off limits to the Matt Tolentino band!

The Matt Tolentino Band never fails to give the dancers plenty of hot rhythms to dance to, but one thing Matt always insists on is variety. You can always count on the boys to slip in rhumbas, waltzes, and other varieties in rhythm, just to keep things interesting for the dancers. There are lots of beautiful dance floors to be had in Dallas- including the Kessler Theatre and the Sons of Hermann Hall, and the band hopes to bring our music to each and everyone of them.

The same upbeat rhythm that drives the Singapore Slingers also drives the Matt Tolentino Band-  Michael Plotkin, drummer extraordinaire, can be seen on the bandstand with the Matt Tolentino band. Plotkin is an all around percussionist, and one of the best at what he does- he can play it all from mallet percussion to timpani, classical to jazz, and he is a natural at traditional jazz. He can get more out of a snare and brushes then many drummers can do with a whole kit! In addition to being one fine musician, he is also one of Matt's best friends, and was even a groomsman at Matt's wedding. The drum kit used in the Matt Tolentino Band, as well as the Slingers, is a 1928 Ludwig. Banjo is the weapon of choice in the MTB, and 2 very fine players are used- George Gagliardi, and Scott Whitfield. George is also a fine guitar player and songwriter, and Scott Whitfield is nationally recognized as one of the best banjo players in the country. Last but not least- the tuba. Irwin Arnstein supplies the bass on the tuba, and is a fine player. When he's not puffing away on the big horn, he can be seen playing everything from the trombone to the organ, and even the steam calliope!

When he is not performing with his own ensembles, Matt Tolentino plays throughout Dallas and Ft. Worth as a sideman, always ready to work. Check out Matt's page here on the website for more information...
